JENS HERRNDORFF

„In 2009 Jens Herrndorff started taking pictures of people and fashion. He can't stop it any
more.  Period.“ - What a way to describe oneself.

How did you start taking pictures?
At the age of 8 years I got my first film camera and photographed since then in varying intensity. With the transition from digital to technology, I have started photographing portraits and fashion in 2008, an area that fascinates me every day and which also gives me infinitely more leeway for creativity.
Is there any special moment in your career which has shaped you somehow?
I am always excited about great results which are caused by a great and creative team. As a photographer alone, at least as someone who is dedicated to the photography of people and fashion, you are nothing. Only a team, which is made up of stylists, makeup artists and models, is able to create a great picture.
It is always a fantastic experience to see how the pictures, you once had in your head, develop and take shape.
How does your working routine look like?
I have to say sufficiently unspectacular. I am spending most of my time in front of the computer and on the phone. For example, organizing shootings, booking models, signing contracts or do other mundane office work. It also eliminates much of the time on post production, so the viewing, selection and post-processing of images. The pure time-share is perhaps the shootings at 20%, but this time is also the most fun.
Are there any inspirations?
First and foremost there are inspirations of other great photographers: David Bailey, with its magnificent photographs from the 60’s and Guy Bourdin, with his fabulous color photos from the 70’s – those are role models and sources of inspiration. I currently like the work of Hedi Slimane and Chadwick Tyler. I also got my inspirations from other areas of art, for example, the color-field painting, movies or music.
With what kind of camera are you photographing?
My main camera is a bit aged Canon EOS 40D and as a second camera I consider a Canon EOS 20D. I also have some classic small-screen and roll film cameras, the special look I love, but with whom I unfortunately photograph far too rare.
What do you think about blogs? Do you read them?
Blogs are a great medium. I have about 20 blogs in my RSS reader that I read every day and also about 20 more that I have bookmarked and I watch them at least once a week. These are mainly fashion and photography blogs, but also music blogs, media and art.
If I get your Ipod in my hands, what kind of music would I find?
I just call a few tracks that have inspired me lately. The order is arbitrary and no rating. Everything is gone, gone, gone - Yes, panic come around - Tim & Jean Framed - George duke I know - Wagner lovesaddest summer - The drums.
